What Is Merge Tactics?
Merge Tactics is Clash Royale's auto-battler mode, built around familiar Clash Royale troops instead of a brand-new roster. Rather than drafting a deck and duelling in real time, you recruit troops with Elixir, merge duplicates into stronger, higher-star versions, and arrange them on a board that then fights automatically against another player's board each round.
Every troop belongs to exactly one Trait — Clan, Goblin, Noble, Undead, Forest, Boss, Electric, and several Legacy traits from past seasons — and stacking enough troops that share a Trait unlocks a team-wide bonus. Layered on top of that is your choice of Ruler, a run-defining passive ability and quest, plus Buildings, Modifiers, and Equipment that let each run play out differently.
How to Play
- 1
Choose your Ruler
Before each run you pick one of the 10 Rulers. Every Ruler brings a unique passive ability and a personal quest that rewards you for leaning into its playstyle.
- 2
Buy troops with Elixir
Spend Elixir in the shop each round to add troops to your board. Elixir cost scales with a troop's power, so early rounds are about efficient picks, not just the strongest card.
- 3
Merge duplicates to upgrade them
Collecting matching copies of the same troop merges them into a single, stronger, higher-star version — a smaller board of merged troops regularly outperforms a wide board of unmerged ones.
- 4
Build around Traits
Every troop carries exactly one Trait. Fielding enough troops that share a Trait unlocks a team-wide bonus once you cross that Trait's troop-count threshold — see the Traits page for every real threshold.
- 5
Battle every round
Your board fights automatically against another player's board. The strongest, best-synergized composition wins the round.
- 6
Pick up Modifiers & Equipment, and complete your Quest
Run Modifiers and Equipment let you adapt your strategy as the run continues, while completing your Ruler's Quest earns you bonus rewards along the way.
Strategies & Tips
Commit to a Trait early
Trait bonuses jump sharply at their thresholds — Clan, for example, goes from +35% max HP / +20% hit speed at 2 troops to +70% / +40% at 4. Spreading across many single-Trait troops without hitting a threshold leaves all of that value on the table.
Watch the Legacy badge
Legacy troops, Traits, and Modifiers are kept on this wiki for reference, but can't currently drop from the shop. Plan your board around what's flagged Active this season, not what's Legacy.
One Trait per troop is a firm signal
Troops don't multi-class — each one carries exactly one Trait — so a troop's Trait tells you exactly which synergy it belongs to. Check the Traits page before committing a board slot.
Your Ruler shapes the whole run
Abilities range from Elixir on a lost round (Royale King) to Elixir on every merge (Spirit Empress). Pick the Ruler whose passive matches the pace you actually want to play that game.
Don't ignore economy Modifiers
Perks like Big Bucks and Elixir Festival compound over a full run. Check the Modifiers page for anything that boosts income before locking in a composition.
Equipment and Buildings unlock by Rank
Both are gated behind a required Rank. Check that requirement on the Equipment and Buildings pages so you're not planning around gear you can't reach yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Merge Tactics in Clash Royale?
Merge Tactics is Clash Royale's auto-battler mode. You draft and merge Clash Royale troops onto a board, build Trait synergies, and battle other players' boards automatically, round by round.
How does merging troops work?
Collecting matching copies of the same troop merges them into a single, more powerful copy at the next star level — a smaller board of merged troops regularly outperforms a wide, unmerged one.
What are Traits, and how do Trait bonuses work?
Every troop carries exactly one Trait (Clan, Goblin, Noble, Undead, Forest, Boss, Electric, and more). Fielding enough troops that share a Trait unlocks a team-wide bonus at specific troop-count thresholds — the Clan trait, for example, grants +35% max HP at 2 troops and +70% at 4. See the Traits page for every real threshold.
What is a Ruler, and how do I pick one?
Before each run you choose one of the 10 Rulers. Every Ruler brings a unique passive ability and a personal quest — Royale King grants bonus Elixir when you lose a round, while Spirit Empress grants bonus Elixir on every merge. Your Ruler choice shapes the whole run, so pick one that matches the strategy you want to play. See the Rulers page.
What's the difference between an Active and a Legacy troop, trait, or modifier?
Active entries are in the current season's pool and obtainable right now. Legacy entries were part of a past season and stay on this wiki for reference — never deleted — but can't currently be pulled from the shop. Every page here flags Legacy entries with a badge.
What are Buildings in Merge Tactics?
Buildings — like Tesla, X-Bow, Inferno Tower, and Mortar — are placeable structures with their own ability and required Rank, each tied to a matching run Modifier. See the Buildings page.
What are Modifiers?
Modifiers are run-altering perks you pick up mid-run, from economy boosts like Big Bucks and Elixir Festival to combat effects, filterable by required Rank and category on the Modifiers page.
What is Equipment, and how do I get it?
Equipment pieces boost the specific troop or Trait they're built for — Juggernaut Armor and Ranger Crossbow are two examples — and unlock by Rank as you climb. See the Equipment page.
Does Merge Tactics affect my regular Clash Royale deck, trophies, or cards?
No. Merge Tactics is a separate game mode with its own troops, progression, and Ranks — it doesn't touch your regular ladder deck, trophies, or card levels.
How many Troops, Traits, and Rulers are currently active?
Counts change every season as troops rotate in and out, so this page never hardcodes a number — the Active / Total counts above are pulled directly from the current dataset every time this page loads.
